Forget the Rain and Ride!

Betws Y Coed is situated in the heart of Snowdonia in Wales. There are no end of possibilities for MTBing in this area. Weekend at last I decided to set out for North Wales. The plan was to do a new trail a friend from work had suggested. This was a high mountain ride with spectacular views. I was really excited as the weather had been brilliant for the past week with cold crisp nights and low temperatures in the day. I opened the door of the house to pack up the car and found no frost. Rats, the temperature had risen due to cloud cover. The usual North West intermidable grey had returned. It did not bode well.

So off I set, the weather getting greyer the nearer I got to Wales. Which is not unusual as Wales has a formidable rainfall! Well, true to form it started raining. So I changed my plan and diverted to The Marin Trail in the Gwydyr Forest not far from Betws Y Coed. I reasoned that it would take no navigation and the trails were well drained leading to a more pleasant ride in the rain.

I parked up and got out. It was gloomy, cold and wet with only one other car there. That said it all! I got kitted out and set off. By now it was absolutely heaving it down. I resigned myself to a wet and cold 3 hours. I reached the main fire road and headed up. I soon broke into a sweat and became as wet inside as out, but at least I was on a bike, breathing fresh air, feeling alive and away from the Christmas brain washing which we have been force fed since October!

At the end of the first singletrack section there was a smile on my face and I didn't care about the weather. The new RP23 rear shock was performing really well. Much better than my standard Float. The bumps were being absorbed much more efficiently. Looked like a good investment.

The rest of the ride went well and the final section was just top! It really is very well designed and never fails to please. I just hadn't got the energy to repeat that last section again. I met only three people that afternoon and my "waterproof" boots were swimming!

And of course it stopped raining on arrival back at the car. Sods Law!!! I stripped off and dried myself down and put on dry stuff. I felt fantastic. You know if it had been raining at home I may have been tempted not to bother. I would have missed a great ride!!

Yep!! After uncharacteristic bright frosty weather for the past week (great for riding) it changed on Sat!! I had to get out. But it was worth it.
